A Day in the Life
On Inpatient Wards:
6:30-8:30 a.m. Sign-In & Bedside Work Rounds on Inpatient Units
The day team gets sign-out from the outgoing night team resident. Then, the day team will chart prep, touch base with nurses, and examine patients.
8:30-9 a.m. Morning Report
A resident (typically PGY-1 or PGY-2) will be assigned to give "Morning Report" on an interesting case. This is one of the highlights of our program, as it always leads to great discussions between the house staff, general pediatric attendings, and subspecialty attendings, and fellows.
9 a.m.-12p.m. Family-Centered Rounds & General Patient Care
Bedside rounding is performed on each patient and involves medical students, house staff, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, and families. Our computer order entry system and portable computers allow most orders to be entered while the team is rounding. However, there is time after bedside rounds to complete notes, call consults, and handle any other patient care-related work.
12p-1 p.m. Protected Teaching Conference
Faculty members from the general pediatric division and subspecialties present lectures to the house staff and medical students. Each month, the house staff also attends seminars on ethics, case conferences, and morbidity and mortality conferences during this one-hour time period. This time is protected for the residents’ education.
1-5:30 p.m. General Inpatient Care
Residents perform any additional work on their patients and admit new patients to the hospital. The team will typically run the list with the attending and came management. This is also a good opportunity for residents to receive even more instruction by speaking with consultants who may have been called in that morning.
5:30 p.m. Sign-Out to the Night Team

Daily morning and noon conferences are held throughout the week.
Chiefs log into EPIC Chat for noon conference to allow for protected time for the residents. Most of our conferences are in person!
X+Y Schedules
Our blocks are 2 weeks long for the entire year. You spend 6 weeks on "core" rotations (ED, Inpatient, NICU, etc) followed by a 2-week outpatient block with your continuity clinic, longitudinal electives, academic half days, admin half days, and wellness half days! See a sample Y schedule below:
