Advocacy

We have a 3-year longitudinal advocacy curriculum that all residents take part in.

In the first year, residents will learn the essential elements of advocacy at all levels, from personal to national.
In the second year, residents will have boots-on-the-ground advocacy experiences. You won’t just learn about WIC, for example, you’ll go to the WIC office and see how it works. You’ll go to the Juvenile Justice program, you’ll testify on health bills.
In the third year, residents will complete an advocacy project, mentored by attendings who are passionate about improving the lives of children.

Advocacy Allies is a group of residents who are especially passionate about bringing our love for serving others outside of the hospital walls and into the surrounding communities. Some of our current initiatives include:

Asthma Day where community members can get their flu shots and their inhalers refilled before the colder months while learning more about asthma! Last year this was Halloween themed which was fun and informative.
Summer Fair: An annual event held at various branches of the Philadelphia Public Libraries to promote safe summer events. We highlight the importance of reading, give out donated books, discuss helmet safety and give out donated helmets, We also share information about hydration, sun protection, and more.
JeffHOPE: This year, Pediatric Residents have joined JeffHOPE!! This is an organization run by SKMC medical students as a network of bridge clinics in homeless shelters in Philadelphia. This is the first time that Pediatric care is included.
Delaware AAP legislative work: All residents are members of the DE AAP. Residents have the opportunity to become board members and take leadership roles in various committees!
